Life Lessons with Anya Taylor-Joy

Is there anything I’ve learnt about confidence? Listen, I’m still figuring it out,” Anya Taylor-Joy tells us in the latest episode of our Life Lessons series. “I think it’s something that has to come from you. I don’t think it’s something that you can rely on other people to constantly validate you for… You have to believe that you are worthy. And that’s actually really hard.”

With her unwavering commitment to creativity, the mesmerising and multifaceted star now has Hollywood and the fashion world at her feet – and is why she was named our Actress of the Year at the 2022 Women of the Year Awards.

The 26-year-old is an expert at transformation, moving seamlessly from one character to the next, kitted out in Regency dress one month and Sixties garb the next, then equally comfortable wearing rags befitting a Mad Max dystopia, or the contemporary looks of her current film, The Menu.

“Trying to pick a project that I’m most proud of is like trying to pick between children,” she laughs. “Even if you do have a favourite, you’re not supposed to say it!” She adds that she’s most proud of how she’s managed the balance of her hectic schedule. “I work back-to-back,” she explains. “Characters are real people for me, and I mourn them when they’re gone. So being able to jump from the skin of one person into the next rather quickly, actually helps me compartmentalise my feelings. I give myself an hour to breathe and then I have to let it go and move on to the next thing the next day. I’m proud that I’ve kept up with that.”

WATCH ANYA TAYLOR-JOY TRANSFORM INTO A “BLONDE FAIRY” FOR DIOR’S HOLIDAY CAMPAIGN

Dior just released its Fall/Winter 2022 holiday campaign starring actor Anya-Taylor Joy.

Debuting a pattern designed by Italian artist Pietro Ruffo, the campaign sees Joy transformed into “a radiant host,” according to the brand’s press release, inviting guests into a wintery chateau. Described as “a blonde fairy,” Joy is surrounded by the icons of Miss Dior, J’Adore, Rouge Dior and Sauvage, with the scene dressed in Ruffo’s bespoke gold pattern.

“For this project, I imagined myself laying on the grass of the Chateau De La Colle Noire at night, looking toward the north, admiring the constellations around the north star, the little dipper, the giraffe, the lynx, the dragon, Perseus, Cassiopeia… Which seem to dance in the sky,” Ruffo explains in a press release. He continues, “Enchanted by this sight, I can smell flowers all around me: violet, angelica, gardenia, jasmine, orange blossom, frangipani, magnolia, the scents of rose and Myrtle – all these aromas illuminated by the constellations, bringing them to new and magical life.”

‘Super Mario Bros.’ Animated Film to Star Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Pratt

The Super Mario Bros. animated movie is powering up with an all-star voice cast led by Chris Pratt as the iconic Nintendo character. It now has a North American release date of Dec. 21, 2022.

Joining Pratt as Mario are Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach) Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong), Fred Armisen (Cranky Kong), Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek) and Sebastian Maniscalco (Spike).

The Super Mario Bros. film hails from Nintendo and Illumination, with Universal distributing in North America and co-financing with Illumination. Its international rollout will be announced at a later date. The video game giant shared the news during Thursday’s Nintendo Direct presentation.

Illumination founder Chris Meledandri and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator of Mario, will produce the film. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the duo behind Teen Titans Go! and Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, are directing, while The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part and Minions: The Rise of Gru screenwriter Matthew Fogel penned the script.

“Mario and Luigi are two of the most beloved heroes in all of popular culture, and we are honored to have the unique opportunity to work so closely with Shigeru Miyamoto and the widely imaginative team at Nintendo to bring these characters to life in an animated movie, unlike any film Illumination has made to date,” said Meledandri in a statement.

“We are collaborating with Chris [Meledandri] and his experienced team to not just create a character licensed film, but a new piece of entertainment which brings Super Mario Bros. to life on the screen, and allows everyone to enjoy whether or not they know about the game,” said Miyamoto in a statement. “The production so far is constructive and going very well, and both parties are learning a lot from each other. We humbly ask that fans wait just a little longer for the premiere, and we hope they look forward to seeing the unique characters from Super Mario Bros. on the big screen.”

Mario first appeared as the protagonist in 1981’s Donkey Kong and first headlined his own game in 1985’s Super Mario Bros. It followed mustachioed plumber Mario and his lanky brother, Luigi, in their quest to save Princess Peach from villain Bowser.

Mario and Luigi infamously appeared in the ill-fated 1993 live-action film Super Mario Bros starring Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi. Since then, Nintendo has been extremely protective of its IP and rarely allowed it to be adapted by Hollywood, making the new animated Super Mario Bros. movie all the more anticipated. Development on the project dates back to 2017.
